Why people use libraries
Here is a report of a study in the US into why and how people use public libraries. We need to do the same kind of analysis over here in order to understand how to improve the service and how to measure whether we are giving people what they need.

I have only recently become aware of the fact that the 'Taking Part' survey run by the DCMS (go to http://www.culture.gov.uk/Reference_library/Publications/archive_2007/tps_annualreport0506.htm?contextId={89A6F8D9-FA43-4DAD-9DF4-364AC840A261} ) attempts to get into some of these areas with regard to specific use of libraries.
And as the 'Taking Part' survey is supposed to be the vehicle for assessing the new National Indicator 9 - 'Use of libraries' - I suspect we will all be paying more homage to this particular consultation exercise than perhaps we have paid hitherto.
