Slashing in Walsall
There is a chapter in Lord Denning's report on the affair of John Profumo and Christine Keeler entitled: "The cutting and slashing" which tells of drug dealing and violence in Notting Hill in the 1960's
But this article is about the libraries in Walsall.

Can`t say I weep about the Tourist Information Centre though. The CDs and DVDs don`t matter. The Children`s Reading project matters very much indeed.

Whilst Susan Hill might not weep at another TIC closure, she chooses to forget that such places are very important outlets for local books and also help to generate a good feel factor within the local community. Many TIC's sell tickets for local charity events, local societies, and also help to promote the area as well as advising on, and taking bookings for local B&B.
The services which TIC's provide are those which are outside the remit of the normal nanny state : long may they survive and prosper.

Yes, these Tourist Infromation Centres do a great deal more than many might assume.
There was uproar when the one in Hove was closed down because the powers-that-be assumed everybody would go to Brighton's.
Just as picking up a book in a library can have great consequences for one's life, so can a direction or a leaflet, a stray remark, in one of these Information Centres.
