The Conservative Party have destroyed public libraries in Buckinghamshire

This article in the Buckinghamshire Free Press (and others in the Bucks Herald) tell the continuing story of the death throes of the Buckinghamshire Library Service.

There was a moment last year when the Conservative Party looked as if they were going to gird loins and bring some common sense to the whole saga, but I'm sad to report I no longer believe they will. The Conservative councillors in Buckinghamshire County Council and their colleagues in Central Office, Hugo Swire, Ed Vaizey, David Shakespeare, Margaret Dewar and MP's John Bercow and Cheryl Gillan et al should get a grip on this pretty quickly. The people in the county are not pleased about it at all: they deserve better and press releases from the council prefaced by blaming the Government will not wash.

I told you not to waste your time on politicians - conservative, labour any sort. They are not interested in libraries. None. They are interested in their own careers and in votes for themselves and in what they regard as Important Matters. No votes, careers in libraries and they certainly don`t regard the topic as of any importance.

I disagree - politicians do care about libraries. We intend to modernise the libraries by removing the books. No one read books anymore. It's all computers and iPods. Our voters don't want libraries they want super-casinos. That is what all our focus-groups tell us and we can back this up with a host of performance indicators and statistics. Why should we listen to UNICEF? If there are children growing up in homes with less than 10 books it is not something which can be solved by politicians. If we remove the books from the libraries it we will leave the decision to the parents whether they feel that books are relevant. This is not dumbing down our culture. It is simply moving with the times. More people vote on Big Brother than vote in local or general elections. We would be foolish to ignore market forces. Literacy is not important to anyone but the so-called experts who have a distorted view of real life. We need to build more prisons and get rid of more libraries. The United Kingdom will be much better off economically if out-source all our jobs which require literacy and numeracy skills to countries which can afford to work for one-tenth of what we have to pay our workers here. This will also solve our crisis in education because with less books and fewer libraries we won't need as many schools and universities. Commercial television and the internet will provide whatever education may be required. It may be hard for some to accept but it is the only viable option for Britain in the 21st Century.
