Merry Christmas in Colyton
Readers will remember the campaign to save their library conducted by the residents of Colyton in Devon, the huge public meeting, the website and many other activities to focus the minds of the council and its officers
So they are delighted to have saved their library. It is very good news.

This is very good news.
As in Hove, it shows what can be achieve when readers rise up in force.
In Devon it was only by dint of the post hoc "scrutiny" system that they were able to foil the "executive" decision.
Here in Brighton and Hove, there is still the committee system. This mean that readers had many opportunities to voice their views and prompt council discussions as part of the campaign to save Hove Library.
Needless to say, Ruth Kelly now wants to pull this committee system from under residents' feet and impose an "executive" set-up. That means there will be less incentive for people to become councillors if they are made powerless...
