WC report
DLA (Delay- the Department of Libraries and Archives) are to launch their long anticipated "WC report" on 14 August when everyone is on holiday. The title is "P-WC"
The authors of the report are said to be extremely flush.
Prizes will be presented by Mr Woolly Jumper, Miss Bo Peep OBE, Mr Custard Cream OBE and Lord Ginger Nut of television. The Countess of Lemon Curd, from the Department of Common Sense, is on holiday but not in Italy. A spokesperson said the whole matter will be played with a Dead Bat (which is a cricketing expression)
The origin of this whole study is a letter I wrote to the Bookseller four years ago. The government consultants attempting to answer the various questions have so far earned two hundred and eighty five thousand pounds, when if they had only asked I could have told them the answers for thruppence and the libraries would now have some books in.
This report is expected to explain that if it costs twenty five pounds to prepare a library book for lending (that cost two pounds to write and print)- who gets the money? It will go on to explain why it then costs another three pounds or so each time it is loaned out, who is going to sort that one out, too. Or perhaps it won't cover these things at all. Who knows?
Nevertheless I am certain that while all these people have been sharpening the office pencil wondering what to say, we, the people, have cheerfully wasted over one billion pounds. That is one bilion pounds- and I doubt if this report will stop that wastage, I'm afraid
Do I get cross? Yes, and so should you
