New posts advertised at the MLA
In response to concerns about the state of the library service, its buildings, its collections of books and its management the MLA, the Museums, Libraries and Archives Council continues to expand
In addition to opening 12 regional offices, this morning the Guardian jobs site has the following jobs advertised at the MLA in central London.
One doesn't need to be a Government Minister to spot that the cost of these posts alone far exceeds the saving that has been demanded, for example, in Dorset or Devon or Lancashire, which has lead to the closure of dozens of public libraries. I think the public should be very cross that this all goes on and those responsible don't trouble to respond to the cries for explanation.

What are all these people DOING all day ?
Posted by: SUSAN HILL at July 24, 2006 9:08 PM
Thank you Susan
You would never have known that this happens- and like everyone else assume that the library service is in the condition you see it because it it starved of funding.
Now you can see there is no starvation - there is just management for the sake of filling an office block full of planners and coordinators and marketing officers. But books and people to staff the libraries.... None
Nor is this a question of books versus computers; or trying to satsify the socially excluded by dumbing down- no it's plain thoughtless greed and empire building, while nobody has control or is concerned to provide a service to the public.

I expect Perkins the library cat, with his inscrutable smile, may know the answer?

You will probably be pleased to hear then that one at least of the MLA posts, the digital futures officer , has been withdrawn without explanation.
I am less pleased as I was preparing an application.
I'm afraid I don't share your view that the root of libraries' difficulties lie in too many overpaid managers. I'm a very experienced librarian who has worked in nealry every kind of library there is, and I've been unemplyed for over five months.
