David Cameron backs library debate
The Bookseller report
"The Conservative Party is to host a seminar on public libraries, to help form its strategy for the sector ahead of the next general election. The move follows the proposed closure of more than 100 libraries and raises expectations that the surrounding furore will become a plank of the Tory campaign. Party leader David Cameron is said to be "enthusiastically behind the forum" It will take place on 15 June hosted by shadow minister for culture Mark Field. Speakers will include British Library ceo Lynne Brindley (who is also on the board of the MLA); a MORI representative who will discuss public perceptions of the sector and library critic Tim Coates"
I am honoured, although I would claim not to be a critic of libraries- on the contrary I do everything I can to promote them; I am, rather, a critic of those who currently manage libraries whether they be officials of national or local government. It is courageous and sensible of the The Conservative Party to do this, so I am very glad to help in any way I can. I believe they have realised that what the public actually want and what politicians are being told the public want are two very different things, and that is not satisfactory. The Conservatives operate more local councils than any other party so it is in their hands now to improve the library service; they don't have to wait until a general election. They have the resource and substance to make improvements over the next four years. That is what I shall say.
